The Gimmick Rally, to be held Thursday, June 19th, is designed to provide a scenic, fun and relaxing outing for everyone (children included). The route will include incredible scenery, and all the unique local Monterey features you could hope for. The route will take you down Cannery Row, and onto the famous coastal 17-Mile Drive, with stops at the Lone Cypress, Otter Cove, Pebble Beach and more. You will sample the charm of Carmel, the extraordinary Mission, and the amazing water views as you wind along the coast. There are also unique inland experiences - the John Steinbeck House, the Steinbeck Museum, downtown Salinas, Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca, and much more… You may have “choices” to make, there are so many things to see and do.
During Parade registration, you will be asked to choose your competition class, either Two-Person or Two Plus Passengers, depending on the number of people in your vehicle (minimum of 2). You may participate as a pair, a family or join in with friends, and you may drive a Porsche, rental car, tow vehicle or “other”, but it must have as many seat belts as passengers! And yes, you can change your class if your plans change during Parade week.
You will also be able to choose your window of departure, in half hour increments, between approximately 8:00 – 11:00am. The rally will begin from the host hotel parking lot, and you may take as little or as much time as you like to complete the drive (minimum of 3 hours without stops). If you wish to be scored, you must turn in your answer sheet at the hotel before 5:00 pm. You should bring pens or pencils, and although not necessary, you may wish to bring a camera (for the scenery), and a clipboard. You will receive a packet with all instructions and information at the rally start.
You will receive driving directions and a separate set of “gimmick” instructions and clues or questions, to which you will respond and turn in for a score at the end of the rally. Also included will be detailed information and brochures about local points of interest. Along the way you will find a number of suggested stops for lunch, snacks, shops, bathroom facilities, gas and of course, opportunities to take photos of the beautiful views (of which there will be many!). You may choose to drive the rally without stops, or make a day of it, and go at your own pace.
I hope you will enjoy the spectacular scenery, the unique stops, the “gimmick” and the entire Monterey Peninsula experience. If you have any questions, please contact Ellen Beck at ebeck944@comcast.net .
